These horses and donkeys have found a forever home at The Liberty Barn. Whether due to their condition or because they have a special place in our hearts, they will always have a safe place here.
Dr Vander Werf was called to attend to a horse on an emergency basis. In the back of the property was Baby. She was very thin and mostly blind. When inquiring about the horse, Dr Vander Werf found out that they were planning on sending her to a gator farm but hadn't found one to take her. They said "that or a sanctuary". Well, say no more, says Dr Vander Werf. Baby came to live out her days
In this photo, you will find Sugar, Blue, Lily, Sunday, and Faith (and Zeke). Sugar and Blue came to TLB when their owner passed away from COVID. Lily and Sunday came with Tonka and Della when their owner had to downsize. Faith came when Dr Vander Werf was called to see a donkey as an ER case. The owners purchased the property with the 2 animals on it and were trying to find them a home withou
Dusty came to be under Dr Vander Werf's care back in 2015. His owners were moving and couldn't take him with. He was supposed to go to another rescue but they didn't have room at the time. His stay was supposed to be temporary, but you can see that it wasn't! He is 35 this year and still going strong.
Gaz was originally a long term medical boarding patient but turned into a Liberty Barn resident after a year and a half stay. He has a chronic back wound from abuse and neglect nearly 10 years ago and is a chronic summer sore sufferer. But he never lets any of that stop him and he is best friends with Captain.
Giselle was originally purchased from an auction lot by an owner with best intentions but the owner developed health concerns and was unable to take care of Giselle. Once she arrived at TLB, it was discovered that she had cancer in both of her eyes. These lesions were removed and Giselle has gained weight and is happy with her other draft friends.
Jules was attacked by a dog and was severely injured and maimed. The owner could not afford the extensive medical care that Jules required so she was given to The Liberty Barn to recover. She loves to stand in the pond all day long when it is hot and is best friends with Della.
Rusty came to The Liberty Barn when the owner could no longer care for him and his buddy. His buddy was found to be very sick with cancer and was laid to rest. Rusty is approximately 32 years old and enjoys his days with his little minis.
Sierra was part of a rescue mission including one other mare, Minnie, who has since passed, and two arab stallions. The owner had health issues and could not care for them. They were found in stalls filled 2 feet deep with manure. Sierra is around 30 years old and enjoys her retirement days in the pond.
Della (Belgian) and Tonka (Percheron) came to us when their owner had to downsize their herd. They have been here around 4 years and have a special place in our hearts.
Flynn, Hazel Grace, Papito, Burrito, Liberty, Hoti. Flynn came from IL and was purchased for $75 off Craigslist as a companion to Dr Vander Werf's heaves horse, Annie. When Annie was laid to rest, Flynn became buddies with Lance, the neurological horse. When he was laid to rest, Hazel Grace came into his life and the rest is history. Papito came from Vero and is the dad of Burrito, Liberty, an
Henry was just 24 hours old when the call was made to Dr Vander Werf to take him in. He was born in the morning and, that night, there was a terrible storm in which his mom died. He spent the night in the rain with her. When he came to Dr Vander Werf, he was very dehydrated and had an infection. He had to be fed via a tube because he would not drink from a bottle or bucket. He went everywhere
Princess was abandoned at her boarding facility and the boarding manager called us to take her in. She has chronic summer sores which are treated daily.
Zeke was purchased from an auction lot in Mississippi by another group. He arrived lame and Dr Vander Werf discovered a wire embedded in his leg. He had the wire removed by Dr Weston Davis at Palm Beach Equine and spent some time at Dr Vander Werf's facility recovering. After he left to go home, we realized how much we missed the big goof and asked if we could adopt him. He is best friends wit
